HEALTHY HORS D’OEUVRES FOR YOUR NYE PARTY
When we party, it’s just right that we throw all self-respect out the window and drink or eat with abandon! Most especially when we are celebrating NYE. It always seems right to go wild when throwing or attending the last party of the year. That is because it is not just the last party of the year but it’s a shindig that crosses over to becoming the first party of the New Year! But skiting it hard on an annual basis can get pretty old. So how should we celebrate it?
How about this year, let’s try not to sink in to debauchery and set the tone of the New Year on a healthy note instead? Line your table with a healthy spread and let people feel that not only you would want to start the year right, but you want them to join in on this well-balanced lifestyle too.
HAZELNUT AND TURKEY SAUSAGE STUFFED MUSHROOMS
Aside from adding a nice crunch to the dish, hazelnut is a great source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, protein and healthy fats. Turkey sausage, on the other hand, contains more protein and it is lower in saturated fat and sodium than pork sausage. This recipe is packed with health benefits and flavor that will surely be a crowd favorite at the NYE party.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Meanwhile in a skillet, heat oil over medium. Add sausage that has been removed from the casing and cook until no longer pink. Remove stems from mushrooms and finely chop it. Add chopped stems, hazelnuts, garlic, onions and rosemary to sausage. Season with salt and pepper and cook until vegetables are tender. Set aside to cool.
Once the mixture has cooled down, add egg breadcrumbs and mix thoroughly. Put mushroom caps on a baking sheet, season with salt and pepper and start stuffing the caps with the mixture.
Bake mushrooms for 25 to 30 minutes.
SALMON AVOCADO AND WATERCRESS CRACKERS
Not only is this party treat a heart-healthy dish because of the salmon and avocado but watercress contains antioxidants that protect our bodies from lung and mouth cancer. It truly is the perfect bite!
Whip up the salmon salad by combining low-fat Greek yogurt and chopped chives. Remove the skin and flake the steamed salmon. Put in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Stir in yogurt mixture and spread the salad on whole grain crackers. Top it off with avocado slices and watercress leaves. Finish off with salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon.
SPICY TUNA SALAD
Serve exotic and exciting dishes that’ll pique their interest. This way, you don’t just let them in on a wholesome and healthy party but you also introduce culture into their palates.
Chop raw tuna into small cubes. Mix wasabi sesame oil and a little bit of Japanese mayo and pour the dressing on the raw tuna and mesh the flavors. Place the salad on top of lettuce cups. Sprinkle crushed rice crackers for texture and roughly chopped scallions. This will surely transport them to the Far East.
